The Hulusi is a Chinese recorder with a head shaped like a gourd.

It is very easy to play like the recorder because you do not need to find that sweet spot / angle like when you play the dizi.

The range of notes is not very wide and it does not have the notes Fa and Ti (unless you cover the note halfway).

One immediately thinks of Yunnan, China when hears the Hulusi, well, unless one does not know where is Yunnan at all….

Leisure

When you learn for leisure, you can have a stress free learning experience by choosing the types of songs that you want to learn. You pick up the basics of the instrument through learning your choice songs.

Exams

When you learn for exams, you have a choice of either following the examination syllabus of Teng-CI-NTU Chinese instrumental examination or NAFA Chinese instrumental examination. Instructors will formulate lesson plans based on either syllabus.

TENG NTU-CI Exam Syllabus

Beginner Hulusi Lessons

This stage is for Grade 1-3 (Based on Teng - CI - NTU - Chinese instrumental examination).

Grade 1 repertoire:
葫芦丝真可爱 (Adorable Hulusi), 男儿当自强 (Man of determination), 小星星 (Twinkle twinkle littler star)

Grade 2 repertoire:
儿童歌谣联奏 (Children’s folk medley), 婚誓 (Marriage vows), 生日快乐 (Happy birthday), 苏珊娜 (Oh Suzanna), 苗家姑娘过山来 (Hmong lady comes to the mountain)

Grade 3 repertoire:
京剧曲牌 (工尺上) (Jing Ju QU Pai- Gong Chi Shang), 葬花吟 (The girl buying flower), 朝鲜民歌联奏 (Korean folk song medley), 星星索 (The song of boat)

Intermediate Hulusi Lessons

This stage is for Grade 4-6 (Based on Teng - CI - NTU - Chinese instrumental examination).

Grade 4 repertoire:
美丽的神话 (Beautiful myth) , 丹戎加东 (Di Tanjong Katong), 新加坡啦 (Singapura), 草原上升起不落的太阳 (The never setting sun on the grassland)

Grade 5 repertoire:
阿瓦人民唱新歌 (Singing of Wa people), 拉沙沙央 (Rasa Sayang), 采蘑菇的小姑娘 (The little girl who pick mushrooms), 印度民歌 (Indian Folk song)

Grade 6 repertoire:

Advanced Hulusi Lessons

This stage is for Grade 7-8 (Based on Teng - CI - NTU - Chinese instrumental examination).

Grade 7 repertoire:
其实你不懂我的心 (You know nothing about my heart), 湖边的孔雀 (Peacock at the lake side), 风中的葫芦 (Bottle gourd in the wind), 傣妹 (Dai Mei)

Grade 8 repertoire:
关东情 (Feelings for Guandong), 节庆欢歌 (Joyful song of the festival), 断桥残月 (Waning moon by the broken bridge), 竹林深处 (Deep in the bamboo forest)

Frequently Asked Questions

1Is it easy to learn the Hulusi?

The Hulusi is one of the easiest Chinese traditional music instruments. Unlike the Dizi where you need a certain embouchure to make a decent tone, you just need to cover the mouthpiece of the Hulusi and blow into it to make a sound. The fingering is much like a recorder where you cover the holes using 3 fingers on each hand and a left thumb.

2How much does a Hulusi cost?

The prices of our Hulusi start from S$45 to S$180. The more expensive Hulusi are made from Rosewood and Black sandalwood. Of course there are much cheaper Hulusi out there but the chances of ending up with one that is unplayable is extremely high.

3How many holes does a Hulusi have?

A hulusi has 7 holes. One thumb hole and six finger holes.

4How many notes can a Hulusi produce?

With the normal finger, a C key Hulusi can play the notes in ascending pitch G, A, B, C, D, E, G, A. With some alternate fingerings, you can achieve the notes B flat and F.
